Maurice Jones began working for the Town of Chapel Hill in August 2018 after nearly 20 years in local government in Charlottesville, VA, which included serving as City Manager starting in December 2010. Jones was first hired by the City of Charlottesville in 1999 to serve as Communications Director. In 2005, he took a position at the Miller Center Foundation, the fundraising arm of the University of Virginia’s Miller Center of Public Affairs where he worked closely with the center’s director, former Virginia Governor Gerald Baliles. He returned to the City of Charlottesville in February 2008 to become Assistant City Manager. As City Manager, Jones was charged with leading Charlottesville’s community relations efforts. He was instrumental in conducting a community race dialogue initiative, establishing a robust workforce development program, developing affordable housing policies, and carrying out a government operations efficiency study. He also worked closely with neighborhood associations and residents on a variety of community issues. Originally from Dale City, Va., Jones graduated from James Madison University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He also holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Darden School Business at the University of Virginia. From 1992 to 1999 he worked in various roles in the field of broadcast journalism including sports director/anchor, reporter and newscast executive producer.Maurice and his wife, Michele, have five children.
