Description
In the current financial crisis, local governments face pressures to adjust their activities and reduce their budgets, but it is important that they do not simply retrench and cut back. Rather, they need to develop new policies, new programs, new processes, and new delivery methods that will allow them to meet the challenges inherent in this unpredictable environment while continuing to provide high-quality services to, and advance the interests of, their constituents. This article presents 23 cases that stand out as exemplary approaches to strengthening the sense of community, remaking the locality, improving health and safety, promoting sustainability, expanding applications of e-government, and improving organizational performance. Some of the programs described have won or been finalists for national awards, or received special recognition, from AFI or ICMA in 2008; others have been selected as case studies for presentation at the AFI’s 2008 Transforming Local Government (TLG) conference. The article concludes with an assessment of the common characteristics that helped these organizations succeed at innovation. This e-document is an article included in The Municipal Year Book 2009.
